Optus Stadium transport a Game Changer
- Public transport education campaign launches on Boxing Day
- Optus Stadium patrons encouraged to plan their journey
- Public transport included in every event ticket
- East Perth Station now fully accessible following upgrade for stadium project
Public transport is the best way to get to events at Optus Stadium - that is the message from a new campaign that will launch with a television commercial on Tuesday, December 26.
The Game Changer campaign encourages event goers to change the way they think about travelling to and from events, and to plan their journey to Optus Stadium using public transport.
Due to the stadium's location on the Burswood Peninsula, some road closures will be in place and there will be limited car access on event days.
Transport Minister Rita Saffioti has been working with agency experts in recent months to develop a detailed transport plan that efficiently moves up to 60,000 patrons in and out of the new facility.
Fans are encouraged to use the stadium's public transport infrastructure - train and bus services, which are located only a short distance from the stadium.
The cost of public transport to and from events is included in every event ticket, ensuring it is the cheapest and most efficient way to get to the stadium. A train will depart the station every two to three minutes, with buses running on about the same frequency.
Meanwhile, the finishing touches are being carried out to the $25 million East Perth Station upgrade, which is now better equipped to accommodate big crowds from Optus Stadium.
The station upgrade is the final piece of rail infrastructure work for the stadium, and is now fully accessible to people with mobility issues, cyclists, and those using prams.
It will complement Perth Stadium Station and the dedicated 22-stand bus station located within metres of the stadium's entrance.
Buses will support the train service by providing Perth central business district shuttle services and services to suburban areas not located near a train line, such as Ellenbrook, Karrinyup and Hamilton Hill. More information on the routes can be found here.
The Game Changer campaign will run across television, radio, press and social media from December 2017 to March 2018, specifically prior to major events held at the stadium.
Optus Stadium will officially open on Sunday January 21, 2018 with the Community Open Day followed by the Gillette One-Day International between Australia and England on January 28, 2018.
Comments attributed to Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:
"The Game Changer campaign is about ensuring the public know that public transport is the best way to get to Optus Stadium.
"People of Perth and particularly sports fans will need to engage in a massive cultural shift toward public transport when the stadium opens.
"In a way, this stadium will prepare people for the future as we look to increase our use of public transport across the network.
"As METRONET expands, particularly the Thornlie-Cockburn line, the access will become far easier with people along the Mandurah Line gaining a far better connection direct to Perth Stadium Station without having to come into the city and change train lines."
