  • Proposed housing development adjacent to Garvey Park in Ascot will not proceed
  • LandCorp will transfer the land back to the State of Western Australia
  • The land (Lot 603 Fauntleroy Avenue) will then be added to the adjoining Garvey Park Reserve

The State Government has decided not to proceed with the proposed development of Lot 603 Fauntleroy Avenue in Ascot.

Located within the City of Belmont's Development Area 8, Lot 603 has been zoned for residential uses since the 1970s.

In doing its due diligence on Lot 603, LandCorp has completed significant consultation to identify and understand the needs of the local community, the potential environmental impacts and the commercial viability of the proposed project.

The aim of the development was to balance all these needs to ensure that the project would sensitively integrate with the community and environment in a commercially responsible manner.

After detailed investigations it has been determined that the challenges of the site will make the project unviable.

The land will be transferred back to the State of Western Australia to be amalgamated with the adjoining Garvey Park Reserve.

Comments attributed to Lands Minister Rita Saffioti:

"After assessing the local community's needs, environmental impacts and economic outcomes, it was clear the proposal did not stack up.

"This approach ensures the best result for the local community and the State as a whole.

"Adding this land to the Garvey Park Reserve will ensure it is retained for recreational use into the future."

Comments attributed to Belmont MLA Cassie Rowe:

"This has been a passionate issue for many local constituents, who held grave concerns for their local parkland.

"This move to protect the lot from potential development is a win for the local community and shows the McGowan Government is listening to residents.

"While the lot had been zoned residential for many years, it has become an ecologically important area for local flora and fauna, which will now be saved thanks to this decision."
