Roadworks pave the way for Albany Middleton Beach development
- Stage 1 of the Middleton Beach Activity Centre project now under way
- Program of roadworks to realign Flinders Parade between Barnett Street and Adelaide Crescent starts in August 2017
- Project aims to deliver a vibrant mixed-use development and community hub
The revitalisation of Albany's iconic Middleton Beach has now started, with roadworks under way in coming weeks.
A contract to construct the new section of Flinders Parade, which runs along the Middleton Beach foreshore, has been awarded to locally based business Tricoast Civil, with landscaping works to be completed by Environmental Industries.
The realignment of Flinders Parade is necessary to provide more functional space for development of the Middleton Beach Activity Centre, including a new hotel and public realm, without impacting on the foreshore.
The roadworks, scheduled to commence mid-August with completion by early December, have been planned in the winter months to reduce inconvenience to the community and local businesses.
In the meantime, LandCorp and the City of Albany are progressing design guidelines for the Middleton Beach Activity Centre, as well as the Foreshore Management Plan, which will go out to the community for comment later this year.
Comments attributed to Lands Minister Rita Saffioti:
"The Middleton Beach Activity Centre is an excellent example of the McGowan Government's commitment to support developments in regional Western Australia that will create employment opportunities and contribute to economic growth.
"Awarding the contracts for road construction and landscaping to local businesses ensures the State Government's investment benefits the local community and the Great Southern region.
"Once completed, the 1.3ha Middleton Beach Activity Centre will offer prime opportunities for accommodation and attractions, helping to unlock the potential of this popular tourist destination.
"This is another part of our strategy to create new jobs and training, particularly in the hospitality sector."
