Rottnest Island powers up new app
- Launch of new renewable energy app
45 per cent of Rottnest Island's electricity needs are from renewable sources
Rottnest Island's renewable power generation can now be viewed in real time with the new Water and Renewable Energy Nexus project mobile phone app.
The app is designed to take you on a journey through the renewable energy scheme that is making Rottnest Island more self-sufficient and sustainable.
Rottnest Island, in collaboration with HydroTasmania's Hybrid Energy Solutions and the Australian Renewable Energy Agency, has been moving towards locally produced clean energy.
Rottnest Island now generates about 45 per cent of its energy from renewable resources of wind and solar power, greatly reducing the use of transported diesel fuel to the Island.
Download the app for your iPhone or Android device.
Comments attributed to Tourism Minister Paul Papalia:
"Rottnest Island is an isolated community and is totally reliant upon its own resources for the supply of energy and water for visitors.
"Careful management of its resources is critical to the sustainability of the Island as a self funding tourism destination.
"You can use the app to explore the Island, visit the solar farm and wind turbine and discover ways to reduce your ecological footprint.
"The idea is that visitors to the popular tourist island can learn more about sustainability and how they can travel responsibly to natural areas in a way that conserves the environment."
