School playground design means play for all
- New facilities and playground at Kenwick School
- Students with disability to benefit from sensory play
A new playground that stimulates all five senses for students with disability has been welcomed at Kenwick School in Perth's eastern suburbs.
Specialist equipment and technology mean all students at the school can experience the joys of play.
A wheelchair swing, sensory garden and soft play room accompany the accessible Play-for-All Playground, while a new Independent Living Centre and kitchen provide learning opportunities for senior students.
Kenwick School has more than 70 students aged four to 18 who have severe and profound intellectual and other disability.
Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery officially opened the new facilities today with Forrestfield MLA Stephen Price.
Comments attributed to Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:
"The benefits of engaging the senses and using motor skills are immeasurable for students with disability, and range from increased confidence to improved social skills and enhanced co-ordination.
"Kenwick School's specialist facilities and teaching make a world of difference to students with disability who attend the school from across the southern and eastern metropolitan areas."
Comments attributed to Forrestfield MLA Stephen Price:
"Having fun on a playground - a regular activity for most children - is not quite so easy for some of the students at Kenwick School.
"By making use of cutting-edge technology and equipment, the new facilities are allowing every student at the school, no matter what their disability or age, to have the experiences that all children should have."
