Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery today announced the new secondary school in Yanchep will open its doors to students ahead of schedule at the beginning of 2018, instead of 2019.

The announcement follows rapid enrolment growth at Yanchep's existing secondary school, Yanchep District High School, which currently has students from Years 7 to 10.

Touring the new school with Butler MLA John Quigley, Ms Ellery said the future-focused school would provide education opportunities for Years 7 to 11 students from 2018 and Year 12 students from 2019.

Stage 1 of construction has the capacity to accommodate 725 students.  As of 2018, Yanchep District High School will operate as a primary school for students from kindergarten to Year 6.

The new school has been designed to provide high quality learning environments for students and features classrooms with built-in communication technologies, science laboratories, library resource centre, football oval and hockey/soccer field, sports hall, eight multi-purpose sports courts, two food studios, textile studio and cafeteria.

Comments attributed to Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:

"I'm delighted that the much-needed new secondary school in Yanchep will open sooner than expected for local secondary students.

"Dr James Kent has been appointed as the foundation principal and brings to the school more than 28 years' experience in public education.  His specialist knowledge in STEM education - science, technology, engineering and mathematics - will be an asset to the school community.

"Work has already begun on the school's curriculum, and appointment of a team of committed teachers and staff is underway."

Comments attributed to Butler MLA John Quigley:

"The opening of the new secondary school ahead of schedule is a great win for local families as currently students living in the Yanchep area have to travel to Butler Secondary College for Years 11 and 12.

"I fought hard to have a custom-designed high school for the Yanchep community so I am pleased this has been delivered.

"The new secondary school in Yanchep will provide families with a state-of-the-art secondary school in their neighbourhood."
