Development in the far north has been given a boost today, as Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan confirmed the State's commitment to facilitate the transfer of 675 hectares of the Goomig Farm Area to a local Aboriginal corporation.

The Yawoorroong Miriuwung Gajerrong Yirrgeb Noong Dawang Aboriginal Corporation (MG Corporation) will receive two land parcels in the Goomig Farm Area, 25 kilometres north of Kununurra, as part of its Native Title settlement under the Ord Final Agreement.

In a mark of good faith and an assurance to stimulate local jobs and growth, the State will transfer the land for a peppercorn payment.

The State has also allocated $500,000 to the MG Corporation over two years to support the organisation's path to financial sustainability.

The McGowan Government is moving to realise the long-awaited potential in the Ord Valley, including broadacre farming and processing opportunities.

Comments attributed to Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan:

"It is an investment in the future capacity of the MG Corporation to explore avenues to build solid business and employment opportunities that will bring wide-ranging benefits to future generations.

"MG Corporation is an important stakeholder in the development of the Ord, and has already demonstrated a willingness to work with other partners to progress opportunities.

"We want to work with MG to explore creative agricultural expansion to add to the critical mass of the Ord horticultural industry."

Comments attributed to Lands Minister Rita Saffioti:

"This arrangement will provide MG Corporation and its people with security of tenure and the means to move towards their goal to become economically self-sufficient.

"The transfer of these lands marks another significant step forward for the growth of agricultural entrepreneurship and the creation of jobs led by a local Aboriginal corporation."
