Thousands to fly to Perth for world Frisbee championships

• State Government to sponsor 2018 World Under 24 Ultimate Championships
• More than 1,200 competitors expected  
• Championships to generate about $2.4 million in visitor spend 

The State Government, through Tourism Western Australia, is sponsoring the World Flying Disc Federation's 2018 World U24 Ultimate Championships, which is expected to attract thousands of visitors to Perth.

The biennial championships comprise national teams, featuring players aged 14 to 24, competing in three divisions - men's, women's and mixed.

More than 1,200 competitors and about 1,300 visitors from about 23 countries are expected to visit Perth for the event, making a significant contribution of about $2.4 million to WA's economy.

The 2018 championships are sanctioned by the World Flying Disc Federation and managed by the Australian Flying Disc Association.

The event will be held on January 7-13, 2018 at the UWA Sports Club in Mount Claremont.

"It's a massive coup for Perth to host the world championships, which have only ever been held three times in iconic cities such as Florence, Toronto and London.

"The event will provide a fantastic opportunity to showcase our transformed city to thousands of people from some of our top tourism markets such as Australia, China, USA, Singapore, New Zealand, Germany and the UK.

"Supporting mass-participation events such as the Ultimate Championships are important as they encourage high levels of visitation which helps fill our hotel rooms, provides a boost to the economy, adds vibrancy to WA and attracts media attention.

"Tourism contributed $10.1 billion to WA's economy in 2016-17 and is a key pillar of the State Government's plan to diversify the economy, create jobs and develop business opportunities."
