Upgrades to infamous Balcatta T-junction paves the way for a smoother run
- Improvements to Erindale Road to reduce road congestion and improve traffic safety
- Job-creating road maintenance projects to help boost the local economy
- McGowan Government committed to improving road safety and busting congestion
- Premier and Cabinet Ministers hold second Community Cabinet for 2018
Road users travelling along Erindale Road will benefit from a dual lane roundabout to be installed at the T-junction of Boya Way.
Premier Mark McGowan and Transport Minister Rita Saffioti visited the troubling junction as part of the McGowan Labor Government's Community Cabinet events in the Balcatta and Kingsley areas.
Located in the heart of Balcatta, the junction, which provides direct access to and from the Mitchell Freeway, has been assessed by an independent auditor as part of a Road Safety Audit to progress the roundabout design.
The State Government has contributed $750,000 to fund the upgrades, which will be delivered by the City of Stirling.
Main Roads Western Australia is expected to provide final approval to the design, which will enable drivers turning onto Erindale Road to do so with more ease.
The McGowan Labor Government's recent State Budget included a total of $3.2 billion towards roads across Western Australia to help reduce congestion, create safer roads and improve the local economy with the injection of more jobs.
Among a range of major regional and metropolitan road projects being undertaken across the State is the nearby $15 million widening upgrade of Mitchell Freeway - northbound between Hutton and Cedric streets, which will also improve congestion for northern suburban residents.
Comments attributed to Premier Mark McGowan:
"Improving problematic roads is a focus for this Government, and we've swiftly fixed a raft of roads and congestion hot spots across the State upon coming into government.
"As a heavy road user myself, I know how frustrating troubling roads can be for people and with many road improvements being underway or due to be undertaken, I would urge people to be patient, adhere to road rules and drive safely.
"Seeing firsthand how difficult the T-junction at Erindale Road is, reaffirms how necessary it is to improve this intersection to enable residents and road users turning onto the road from Boya Way, to do so more safely and with more ease."
Comments attributed to Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:
"This intersection upgrade is a cost-effective solution to improve safety and traffic flow at an increasingly busy junction.
"The upgrade will improve safety at a busy intersection close to the Mitchell Freeway, where the McGowan Government has committed to several other upgrades, including widening projects and new principal shared paths.
"I am very confident that local residents will start seeing a difference in traffic and safety in coming years as these projects reach completion."
Comments attributed to Balcatta MLA David Michael:
"Fixing this intersection was, by far, the single biggest issue of concern for residents when I doorknocked this area prior to the 2017 State election.
"I am proud that with the City of Stirling, we will be making this intersection safer for both residents as well as workers and visitors to the Balcatta Industrial Area."
Comments attributed to City of Stirling Mayor Mark Irwin:
"Residents in the surrounding area of Balcatta and Stirling have held concerns for road safety at this intersection for a number of years.
"More than 35,000 vehicles per day travel through the intersection on an average weekday and statistics indicate there have been 21 reported crashes at this location in a five-year period (between 2013 and 2017).
"This upgrade will not only improve safety for all motorists using the intersection, but will reduce the sometimes lengthy delay for vehicles exiting Boya Way onto Erindale Road."
