The McGowan Government has farewelled Western Australia's Commonwealth Games team as it heads to the Gold Coast for the 2018 Games.

Premier Mark McGowan and Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray joined athletes, officials, coaches and supporters at the Gold Coast Glory Athlete Farewell at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre yesterday.

The 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games will take place between April 4 to 15.

The 28 Western Australia athletes who have so far qualified in the Australian team were farewelled - representing swimming, athletics, cycling, hockey, basketball, boxing, diving, netball and shooting.

Household names such as Brianna Throssell, Caitlin Bassett and Holly Barrett will join other elite up-and-coming WA athletes looking to make their names for Australia at a home Commonwealth Games.

Last month, more than 310 Western Australians took part in the Queen's Baton Relay, through regional WA and Perth, to officially herald the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

Comments attributed to Premier Mark McGowan:

"To date, we've seen hundreds of Western Australians involved in celebrating the games through the Queen's Baton Relay. It is humbling to now see many more people join to farewell our home grown athletes today.

"Best of luck to this group of elite and up-and-coming athletes, from across WA, as they join the Australian team to compete in one of the most prestigious international sporting competitions."

Comments attributed to Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray:

"Having the chance to represent Australia at a home Commonwealth Games is something truly special for our athletes - and we wish them well.

"The State Government provides strong support to both grassroots sport, where talents are forged; and the Western Australian Institute of Sport, where our young talents are helped to become champions."
