Karnup Station project planning continues as METRONET rolls out

Planning for Karnup Station is underway, with the development of a full business case for the station and the surrounding residential development starting.
  • Development of business case and planning underway for Karnup Station project
  • Timeframes of Karnup project adjusted due to Lakelands Station construction and the large scale of other METRONET projects commencing
  • Lakelands has received 80 per cent funding from Federal Government allowing construction to begin sooner than anticipated
  • Review of existing services in Singleton, Golden Bay and Secret Harbour to be undertaken to ensure residents receive better bus services in the short term

Planning for Karnup Station is underway, with the development of a full business case for the station and the surrounding residential development starting.

The update on the METRONET project comes after the Federal Government decided to fund the 80 per cent construction cost of Lakelands Station on the Mandurah Line.

The Federal Government refused to fund the construction of the Karnup Station.

Due to the funding agreement on Lakelands and the huge scale of other METRONET projects about to start, the timeframe for construction of Karnup Station has been adjusted.

Next year alone the McGowan Government will have six METRONET projects underway at once - it is an unprecedented level of rail construction that our State has never seen before.

The McGowan Government will conduct a review of existing Transperth services in Singleton, Golden Bay, Secret Harbour and other nearby suburbs to ensure bus services are improved in the short-term.

A timeframe for construction of Karnup station will be determined as part of the project definition phase. Karnup Station is a METRONET Stage One project.

Comments attributed to Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

"The McGowan Government is committed to building Karnup Station and has started work on the full business case.

"The Federal Government's decision to contribute 80 per cent of the cost of Lakelands has meant the State Government can also construct this station on the Mandurah Line.

"While this work is ongoing, I have asked the PTA review its bus services in the Secret Harbour, Golden Bay, Singleton and Karnup areas to make sure those services meet the needs of the local residents until Karnup Station is completed."

Comments attributed to Warnbro MLA Paul Papalia:

"While it's frustrating the Federal Government has refused to contribute funding to the construction of Karnup Station, the McGowan Government will continue to develop the project.

"Karnup Station is a METRONET Stage One project, with development of a full business case underway.

"The review of bus services gives local residents in our community the chance to have their say about what public transport services they would like to see in our local area whilst planning for Karnup Station continues."
