Abandoned Mines Features pamphlet

Fact sheet
Abandoned mine features are disturbances to the land caused by mining and/or exploration such as mine shafts, waste landforms, buildings and abandoned equipment for which no individual, company or organisation can be held responsible for rehabilitation.
Last updated:

Abandoned mine workings are part of the heritage of Western Australia where mining began more than 150 years ago.

In the past, some miners simply left sites without attempting to make them safe, while others have deteriorated, despite originally being secured many years ago.

These abandoned mine features can be a hazard to people enjoying outdoor activities including walking, cycling, camping or caravaning, and prospecting.

The Department of Mines, Petroleum and Exploration (DMPE) has recorded more than 190,000 abandoned mine features but there could be many more that are yet to be listed.
