APA Group – Parmelia Gas Pipeline hydrogen conversion feasibility study public knowledge sharing report

Research and analysis
An evaluation of the technical and commercial feasibility of converting a section of the existing Parmelia Natural Gas Pipeline to transport hydrogen.
Last updated:

The Study successfully demonstrated it is technically feasible, safe and efficient to operate the section of pipeline at current operating pressure using 100 per cent hydrogen.

The Study confirmed the pipe steel and proposed design generally meets the requirements of the American hydrogen pipelines and piping standard ASME B31.12 and has further determined a safe operating envelope for the pipeline steel to provide satisfactory performance.

A pipeline conversion plan has been prepared for the project and outlines the future activities required. It will be refined in the next phase to form a ‘Basis of Design” for the 42 km section of the Parmelia Gas Pipeline.

The project supported the creation of an Australian Hydrogen Pipeline Code of Practice, and also includes the development of a template roadmap for future conversion projects.
