The Department of Mines Petroleum and Exploration (DMPE) is now inviting stakeholder feedback on the updated draft Abandoned Mines Policy 2026.
Originally published in 2016, the Policy was released to provide a framework to guide the development and prioritisation of Abandoned Mines Program (AMP) projects.
This draft Policy entails minor changes, including to:
- simplify and modernise the content and structure of the document;
- clarify the objectives of the AMP, including the definition of rehabilitation; and
- clarify that employment opportunities for local Aboriginal people will be identified through the planning and execution of AMP projects.
All submissions received will be reviewed, considered and assessed for inclusion in the publication of the final Abandoned Mines Policy 2026 update.
The closing date for comments is 30 January 2026.
