Last updated:

The Department of Mines, Petroleum and Exploration (DMPE) regulates and monitors the mitigation of environmental impact from the resource industry. To protect landscapes, native species and to support other land users who rely on environmental stability, DMPE and industry coordinate to prevent environmental risks.

The department and industry’s responsibility of WA’s environment aim for the successful and effective outcome of rehabilitation and the decommission of petroleum operations.

The 2025 rehabilitation and decommissioning spotlight included a range of projects ranging from decommissioning, rehabilitation and restoration of petroleum infrastructure and examples of effective integrated rehabilitation at mining operations.

Together, these examples demonstrate responsible resource development and the outcomes that can be achieved when effective rehabilitation and decommissioning is undertaken.
