The Department of Mines, Petroleum and Exploration administers competitive acreage releases based upon work program bidding, assesses the appropriateness of exploration, development, and production methods, regulates and oversees geothermal energy activities of title holders to ensure that they are conducted safely and in an acceptable environmental manner, and ensures that administrative processes and title holders respect the legitimate rights of landowners and other land users.

Geothermal exploration and development in Western Australia is regulated and administered under the Petroleum and Geothermal Energy Resources Act 1967.
