The Aboriginal Empowerment Unit (AEU) was established to deliver the Aboriginal Empowerment Initiative (AEI) which endeavours to streamline communications and enhance connection between the Department of Mines, Petroleum and Exploration (DMPE) and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stakeholders and communities.
Part of this initiative is the department’s commitment to continuous learning and development, empowering staff, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, to engage with Aboriginal communities in a genuine and meaningful manner. The AEU works to develop the cultural capability, competency and understanding within the department and aims to support and encourage greater procurement of Aboriginal businesses in an effort to expand economic opportunities.
The AEU works with various areas of DMPE to assess and re-evaluate current policies, procedures and practices that effect Aboriginal stakeholders, to ensure they are culturally appropriate and accessible. With intention to ensure improved outcomes for Aboriginal people and businesses, the unit is taking steps to educate and guide communities of the functions of the resource sector and navigation of government systems.
With team members who have experience in walking two worlds, AEU works towards bridging cultural gaps, platforming Aboriginal voices, and building trust and understanding with Aboriginal communities. As part of an effort to achieve this, AEU has developed a network of regional teams that work to address region-specific engagement issues. This emphasis on understanding and connection aids in the unit’s ability to provide support to Aboriginal stakeholders.
