The WA Government has a Lead Agency Framework for priority, significant and strategic projects. Within the framework, every proposal receives a level of case management consistent with its complexity, potential impacts and/or State significance.
To provide a comprehensive and rapid triage service and provide a central point of contact for applicants, the Department of Mines, Petroleum and Exploration (DMPE) has embedded Cross Sector Triage roles within its Resource and Environmental Compliance Division.
The creation of these positions, staffed by Principal Environmental Officers, supports broader Government reforms to streamline approvals processes, enhance transparency and drive cross-agency collaboration.
Customer experience
DMPE are making it easier for businesses to get the support they need. This streamlined approach includes:
- Establishing single points of contact for customers and clarifying entry points through strong inter-agency collaboration.
- Facilitating whole-of-government advice to navigate cross-agency processes and enable timely decisions.
- Providing access to a dedicated officer ahead of proposal referrals or application submissions to scope requirements, including technical environmental requirements.
- Enabling new and innovative approaches to approvals and mitigate risk for proponents.
- Clarifying roles to strengthen connections between industry and government agencies.
Customer experience protocols
Following initial contact with a customer, the Cross Sector Triage officers will:
- Act as a single DMPE representative to facilitate central coordination and become the sole point of contact for the customer.
- Coordinate and attend initial cross-agency meetings with the customer to provide clear approval pathways.
- Manage the relationship while liaising with experts in other departments to navigate approval complexities, ensuring proponents are well informed about requirements, expectations and timeframes.
