Petroleum and energy resources

We ensure the responsible management, exploration and development of petroleum and energy resources in Western Australia.
Last updated:

The department is responsible for ensuring that resources are managed by industry in an effective, efficient, and sustainable way — maximising recovery in the public interest and delivering both immediate and long-term benefits to the Western Australian and Australian communities.

In Australia, the exploration and development of petroleum and geothermal energy is governed by a framework of laws and regulations overseen by both State and Commonwealth Governments. This shared responsibility also extends to the administration of petroleum royalties.

All registered titleholders must conduct operations in accordance with good oilfield practice—prioritising safety, preventing petroleum releases into the environment, and avoiding unnecessary disturbance to land, property improvements, or lawful activities of others. To retain their title, holders must meet work conditions, comply with directions, submit required data and reports, and pay annual fees.
