A dedicated group of volunteers – Glenys Bellis, Glenda Green and Sherry Martin – has made a lasting impact on the Shire of Irwin through their ongoing highway clean-up efforts. What began as a simple idea, inspired by one member’s early experience collecting rubbish with the Boy Scouts, has grown into a consistent and meaningful contribution to the local environment and community.
The trio spend most weekends working along sections of the highway, typically on Saturdays and Sundays and sometimes starting on Fridays. Each session lasts at least four hours, often longer in favourable weather. Their goal is to maintain a clean and welcoming entrance to town while protecting the surrounding natural landscape.
Their work is supported by a network of generous community members. Christina from Seaspray Café provides food and drinks, Steve Featherstone donates fuel and assists with the removal of heavy waste and friends contribute bottles and cans for refunds. Additional donations from the community help cover fuel and refreshments, making the initiative a true team effort.
The group’s efforts have led to a noticeable reduction in litter along the highway and have significantly improved the town’s presentation. Their work has also fostered a strong sense of community pride and environmental responsibility.
