TRANSITIONING TO AN INDIVIDUAL HUNTING LICENCE

In order to transition to an Individual Hunting Licence, you will need to:

  • Comply with numerical limits (see below).
  • Provide updated storage & security evidence (if required).
  • Obtain a standard hunting permission that is adequate to support the firearm(s) on your licence.

All documents should be emailed to FirearmsProject@police.wa.gov.au with the subject line Individual Hunting Licence and your licence number.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Numerical Limits

Individual Hunting Licences may only apply to Category A & B firearms.

Individual Hunting Licences are subject to a Numerical Limit of five (5) firearms.

Note:

Additional barrels that are approved for the licence do not count against this limit.

If you are currently licensed to more than five (5) hunting firearms, you will need to dispose of the excess firearms before your Individual Hunting Licence can be issued. This needs to be done prior to the expiry of your transitional authority. You may elect to do this by taking part in the Voluntary Buyback Scheme, which is currently running until 14 January 2026.

Standard Hunting Permission

You will need to obtain a portal-issued hunting permission from the owner/manager of a registered property.

Please consult the linked information sheet regarding firearms and acreage requirements.

If you do not hold an active hunting permission from the owner/manager of a registered property, then you will not be eligible to hold an Individual Hunting Licence. If you elect to move your firearms to Competition Use via club support from a licensed club, you may be eligible to transition to an individual competition licence.

If you, or any other landowner are having technical difficulties getting your property registered via the portal, or issuing hunting permissions via the portal, please contact our Transition Team on 1300 894 474 immediately for assistance.

Storage and Security Requirements

If your current storage and security arrangements are not eligible for grandfathering*, then you may be required to provide evidence of upgraded storage and security before your licence can be issued.

*Existing licence holders who possess five (5) or fewer firearms do not require a storage upgrade, as their previously approved storage qualifies for grandfathering provisions under the new legislation. The term grandfathering means your current approved storage and security arrangements for your licence can remain unchanged.  The grandfathering remains in place unless you apply for a new firearm(s) or replace an existing firearm, at which time the new storage & security requirement come into play.

In the event that you do require upgraded storage and/or security, you will need to email your completed Storage Statement to FirearmsProject@police.wa.gov.au referencing your licence number.

Please consult the storage matrix below to determine the storage and security requirements that apply to your circumstances. It should be noted that your storage requirements are determined by the number and type of firearms on your licence, plus any other firearms registered to your storage location.

Note:

Licensing Services is aware that some people may be impacted by supply shortages with respect to new firearms cabinets.

If you are impacted by this, please contact our Transition Team on 1300 894 474 for assistance.
