Geothermal reservation of blocks in Western Australia.
Last updated:

On 28 October 2025, via the Government Gazette, the Department of Mines, Petroleum and Exploration (the department) under delegation from the Minister for Mines and Petroleum, pursuant to section 28(1a) of the Petroleum and Geothermal Energy Resources Act 1967, declared an extension to all existing reservations of graticular blocks that comprise the geothermal energy Prime Areas. These areas are set aside to be drawn on for future Geothermal Energy Acreage Release.

As such, the reserved areas shall not be the subject of a geothermal energy exploration permit, geothermal energy drilling reservation, geothermal energy retention lease, geothermal energy production licence, geothermal energy special prospecting authority or geothermal energy access authority.

The reservation of these graticular blocks remains in effect until 16 October 2027, unless otherwise varied or revoked.

Registered users of Tengraph Web and Geoview.WA can now view this publicly available layer on those platforms under the designated Geothermal Energy Prime Areas (Declared Reserved Blocks) filtered layer.
