The Building Services Board has issued $10,000 in fines for inadequate oversight of building work to install a shade structure and basketball court at a remote Pilbara community.

The Board found Pinjar-based PMC Roofing Pty Ltd (BC12930) and its nominated supervisor failed to ensure the building services were properly managed and supervised as required by the Building Services (Registration) Act 2011.

According to information presented to the Board, some work carried out by PMC Roofing did not comply with approved plans and engineering specifications. Issues included incorrect footing sizes, which could have caused the shade structure to become dangerously unstable during strong winds.

Another builder later rectified the work.

The Board fined PMC Roofing and its nominated supervisor $5,000 each for the management and supervision failures, while noting their lack of prior building compliance matters and factors such as the site’s remote location and pandemic restrictions.

Building Commissioner Phil Payne said the case showed the importance of close supervision of building projects.

“Building contractors are responsible for all work under their contracts to ensure structures are safe and constructed to the correct standards,” Mr Payne said.

“This oversight must occur at all building stages so any issues can be resolved before rectification becomes difficult or costly.”
