Bushfire construction requirements for Class 9 vulnerable use buildings

This announcement is to provide guidance ahead of the introduction of new bushfire construction requirements for Class 9 vulnerable use buildings in designated bushfire prone areas from 1 May 2025.

Amendments are currently being drafting to the Building Regulations 2012 that will:

  • extend the transition of new bushfire construction requirements in Part G5
    of the Building Code (Part G5) for Class 9b primary and secondary schools and Class 9b early childhood centres, and any Class 10a building or deck immediately adjacent or connected to a building of these types, until 30 April 2028; and
  • address administrative matters around the introduction of the bushfire construction requirements of Part G5 for Class 9a health care buildings and Class 9c residential care buildings from 1 May 2025.

The intention is for the amendment regulations to be finalised prior to 1 May 2025. Building and Energy will provide further information once the amendment regulations are finalised.
