Connected by Water, a new conference held by the Australian Water Association, will kick off in Perth later this month at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre.
The conference will provide an opportunity for the water industry and other sectors of the community to come together to discuss the way water underpins economic prosperity, communities, the environment, and Indigenous connection to Country.
As the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation is a conference sponsor, some of our environmental water and climate specialists will be there to present on projects that have driven change in sustainable water management in Western Australia.
Senior Environmental Officer Natasha Del Borrello is presenting a session on our Gnangara groundwater allocation plan, which has led the way in setting out how we will manage the Gnangara groundwater system – Perth’s largest natural water resource – to continue adapting to climate change.
Senior Climate Change and Water Specialist Margot Turner will give a joint presentation with Water Corporation on the application of climate projections for water management. Climate projections will be a key topic of the conference, with industry professionals looking for advice about how the water industry can adapt to the impacts of future rainfall and temperature changes.
Winsome MacLaurin, Principal Policy Officer and lead for Kep Katitjin – Gabi Kaadadjan Waterwise Perth Action Plan 2, will take part in hosting a site visit of two of the original wetlands of the Boorloo (Perth) region, Danjanberup (Smith’s Lake in North Perth) and Boodyamooling (Hyde Park). He will be joined by:
- Jason Barrow, proud Noongar man with Danjoo Koorliny and the Centre of Social Impact
- Nandi Chinna, poet and author of Swamp: Walking the Wetlands of the Swan Coastal Plain
- Sarah Hill, Manager Parks at City of Vincent.
The site visits will allow attendees to learn how Indigenous teachings can be applied in a modern context and inform future water planning.
On 29 February, Winsome will also present on the Kep Katitjin – Gabi Kaadadjan Waterwise Perth Action Plan 2 Collaboration and Systems change.
