The Building Services Board has fined a Maddington building company and its nominated supervisor a total of $7,500 for inadequate oversight during construction of two double-storey homes in Girrawheen.
The Board found BD Living Pty Ltd (BC102897) and MD Mominur Rahman (BP102259) failed to ensure the building services were properly managed and supervised as required by the Building Services (Registration) Act 2011.
According to information presented to the Board, BD Living was contracted in 2021 to build the two-storey houses on neighbouring blocks.
When the homeowners lodged a complaint with Building and Energy, inspections revealed some work did not comply with the approved plans and applicable building standards. Issues included substandard brickwork, water entry into the buildings and incorrect elevations and roof heights.
The Board fined BD Living $5,000 and Mr Rahman $2,500 for the management and supervision failures, while noting their lack of prior building compliance issues and cooperation with the investigation.
A building service dispute related to the workmanship matters is also in progress with Building and Energy.
Building Commissioner Peter Stewart said the case showed the importance of close supervision of building projects.
“Although a bricklayer requested by the homeowner carried out much of the non-compliant work, the building contractor remains responsible for all work under its contracts,” Mr Stewart said.
“This oversight must occur at all building stages so any issues can be resolved before rectification becomes difficult or costly.”
