The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (the department) is pleased to announce the appointment of Sasha Pendal as the new Deputy Director General Approvals, following a rigorous and competitive recruitment process.

Sasha brings more than 25 years of leadership experience across both government and private sectors. Most recently, Sasha served as Executive General Manager at Fortescue Metals Group, where she led strategic planning, governance, and stakeholder engagement initiatives. Her deep understanding of Western Australia’s environmental approvals landscape will be pivotal in advancing the State Government’s reform agenda and supporting the department’s organisational transformation.

In addition to her professional achievements, Sasha is a Board Member of the Fremantle Dockers and has contributed as a non-executive director to several community organisations.

Her appointment strengthens the department’s leadership team and reinforces our commitment to delivering timely, transparent, and effective environmental approvals.

DWER has been searching for a new permanent Deputy Director General Approvals after Mr Chris Shaw was promoted to the position of Director General of the new Department of Mines, Petroleum and Exploration in August 2025.

We welcome Sasha to the department and look forward to her leadership in this critical portfolio.
