Department of Housing and Works (DHW) Director General Leon McIvor was joined this morning by Common Ground tenants, service providers Mission Australia and Mission Australia Housing, and government stakeholders to mark the opening of the landmark project.

DHW’s Executive Director Housing Delivery and Asset Maintenance, Monica Nichevich, said the event provided an opportunity to formally recognise the collaboration between government and community partners that had enabled the successful delivery of the project.

“We will continue to work closely with service providers and the Department of Communities to ensure East Perth Common Ground meets the needs of its tenants and remains a valuable community asset for years to come,” Monica said.

As part of the proceedings, it was announced that the building has been given the name Kaalak, meaning ‘home’ in the Noongar language.

Kaalak – East Perth Common Ground provides permanent, supportive housing for adults who are experiencing ongoing homelessness, rough sleeping and/or earning a low income.

Tenants have been moving in through a phased approach since February, supported by structured selection and unit allocation processes managed collaboratively by Mission Australia Housing and Mission Australia.

The project is part of the Perth City Deal Homelessness Housing Projects, a partnership between the Australian Government, WA Government and the City of Perth.
