Drivers are being reminded to take extra care on the roads this Labour Day long weekend, with double demerits in place across Western Australia.

With more people travelling to enjoy the public holiday, double demerit penalties apply for high-risk offences such as speeding, mobile phone, drink and drug driving and seatbelt violations, to help reduce the risk of serious crashes and keep everyone safe.

Getting caught during the long weekend can mean twice the usual demerit points and a faster path to losing your licence.

Safety cameras will be enforcing

Safety cameras capable of detecting mobile phone, speed and seatbelt offences will be operating throughout the state.

These cameras can detect drivers who are using or touching a mobile phone while driving, drivers not wearing or incorrectly wearing their seatbelt, and front seat passengers who are not properly restrained.

Drivers are legally responsible for ensuring all passengers in their vehicle are wearing their seatbelt properly, regardless of where they are seated. This includes making sure seatbelts are not placed under the arm, behind the back or left unbuckled.

“Everyone deserves to get home safely.”

Road Safety Commissioner Adrian Warner said long weekends are a busy time on WA roads and urged drivers to make safe choices behind the wheel.

“Double demerits are not about catching people out, they’re about reminding people to do the right thing to prevent serious injuries and save lives,” Mr Warner said.

“Not wearing a seatbelt properly can significantly increase the risk of serious harm in a crash. We know that in WA, more than 20 per cent of fatalities in car crashes over the past five years involved people not wearing a seatbelt correctly.”

“These cameras are in place to reinforce that every trip, no matter how short, needs to be a safe one.”

The Commissioner encouraged drivers to remain patient and considerate during the busy period.

“Before setting off take a few extra seconds to check that everyone is buckled up correctly, keep mobile phones out of reach while driving and allow extra time for your journey.

“Whether you’re heading away, visiting family or simply enjoying a day out, plan ahead, follow the rules and look out for others. Everyone deserves to get home safely.”

100 per cent of safety camera fines are reinvested in road safety initiatives which reduce injuries and save lives on WA roads.
