The Western Australian Government has marked a major milestone in the State’s economic future, announcing the first State Development Area (SDA) under the new State Development Act 2025, alongside five priority projects to fast-track strategic investment and job creation.

The Western Trade Coast, located south of Perth, is being declared Western Australia’s inaugural State Development Area, led by the Office of the Coordinator General within the Department of the Premier and Cabinet.

The Western Trade Coast already plays a critical role in heavy industry, defence, freight and trade, contributing up to $20 billion to the State’s economy and supporting around 43,000 jobs.

State Development Areas are defined precincts identified to support strategic economic development and coordinated infrastructure delivery. The declaration enhances coordination and centralised oversight, while maintaining existing land ownership, land uses and approval processes.

Alongside the SDA declaration, the Coordinator General has identified five Priority Projects to be progressed under the new legislation. This includes the NeoSmelt pilot project for low-emission steel production within the Western Trade Coast, and four wind farms across the Midwest and Wheatbelt (Parron Maam Marang Wind Farm, Kondinin Wind Farm, Marri Wind Farm, and Narrogin Wind Farm).

These projects will benefit from coordination across government to support timely delivery of state significant infrastructure and investment outcomes.

They support Western Australia’s energy transition, providing greater certainty to industry and reinforcing the State’s role as a reliable destination for long‑term investment in low emissions projects.

This announcement signals the Government’s commitment to activating strategic locations, strengthening Western Australia’s competitive advantage and supporting long-term jobs and investment across the State.
