Operated by Bundiyarra Aboriginal Community Aboriginal Corporation (BACAC), the service provides safe, culturally appropriate and affordable accommodation for up to 100 Aboriginal people visiting the region.
MercyCare, a community service organisation with experience managing Western Australian Aboriginal Short Stays, is partnering with BACAC, which will provide guidance, mentoring and capacity-building in a collective governance model.
The accommodation site features 44 modern guest rooms, communal cooking and laundry facilities and a nature playground. A half basketball court and dining area feature artworks by Aboriginal artists Nicole Dickerson and Justin Martin respectively.
Guests are offered a choice of 16 single/twin rooms, 14 family rooms and 14 universally accessible rooms. They will also be provided with meals, laundry services and where required, transportation support.
Construction commenced in early 2024 by Mid-West Gascoyne builder and Registered Aboriginal Business GBSC Yurra Pty Ltd which employed more than 270 people, including subcontractors. They exceeded their targets for Aboriginal employment with 25 Aboriginal workers (the target was 10), and from this group eight were Aboriginal apprentices (the target was two).
BRACKS is located in Utakarra, a suburb of Greater Geraldton, where a portion of the land has strong cultural ties with the Yamatji people and is a historical camping ground for travellers.
Geraldton now hosts Western Australia’s fourth Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodation, with others operating successfully in Kalgoorlie, Derby and Broome. This project was delivered by the State Government with input from Aboriginal communities, Elders, Traditional Owners and stakeholders across the Mid-West Gascoyne region.
