WA’s building industry regulator is seeking input from industry participants as it examines the regulation of fire systems installers in the State.

Building and Energy is encouraging people who work on fire systems installations to complete an online survey now open for comment.

Feedback is sought from people with experience in constructing, installing, testing or maintaining systems in Class 2 to 9 buildings (apartments, public buildings, hotels and commercial and industrial buildings) such as:

  • firefighting water services (fire sprinkler, hydrant and hose reels, and pumps and tanks for those systems);
  • passive fire construction or installation (fire-rated doors, walls, ceilings, firestopping of penetrations through walls, floors and ceilings);
  • fire detection and alarm systems with a fire indicator panel; and
  • emergency lighting and illuminated emergency exit signs.

Respondents will be able to provide further information about instances of non-compliance and have the option to remain anonymous if they prefer.

The survey follows progress on other consultative work with stakeholders such as industry bodies and unions.

Building Commissioner Peter Stewart said regulation of fire systems was complex as the work intersected with the regulation of plumbing, electrical and building work.

“Survey responses will provide us with industry insights and help to inform the recommendations we make to the Minister for Commerce about whether regulatory intervention is needed and, if it is, what form it should take,” Mr Stewart said.

“We encourage everyone with an interest to have their say to help ensure this important work is carried out correctly and efficiently.”

The survey, available at consultation.dmirs.wa.gov.au, is open until 4 August 2025.

It will take about 15 minutes to complete, depending on the detail provided.

More information about the fire systems review is available in the Review Paper.

Building and Energy’s review of the regulation of fire systems installation is part of WA’s Building Better reforms announced in December 2023. Laws are being prepared to implement the reforms that the State Government has already committed to.
