New Urban Greening Strategy released to increase trees, low-level vegetation and green spaces in Perth and Peel
Last updated:

In mid January 2026, the State Government announced the release of the first-ever Urban Greening Strategy for Perth and Peel and Let’s Grow program to help combat urban heat, strengthen climate resilience, support community health and wellbeing, and enhance biodiversity and access to nature.

Together with the Let’s Grow Grants program, which opened on 12 February, the Strategy is driving progress to achieve the Government’s commitment to increase Perth’s tree canopy cover to 30 per cent by 2040, and plant one million trees by 2035.

Schools and community groups have the opportunity to apply for grants to undertake projects that increase tree canopy and greening in urban areas where people live, learn, work and spend time — including school grounds, community spaces, street verges, parks, carparks, neighbourhood hubs, public transport stops, and walking and cycling routes.

A $10 million package over four years will deliver the grants program, with $2.5 million allocated each financial year to support as many eligible projects as possible.

These measures build on other State Government urban greening activities already underway, including the $6.9 million Treebate incentive and the Tree Recovery Program.
