Next tranche of planning reforms announced

A new Bill will be introduced to Parliament later this year as part of the WA Government commitment to continue the planning reform agenda.

The Planning and Development Act 2005 will be amended to change the composition and operation of the Western Australian Planning Commission (WAPC) and establish a permanent pathway for assessment of development proposals of State and regional significance.

The Act will also be amended to refine provisions established for the temporary Part 17 process and create a new, permanent assessment pathway.

The reforms will create a streamlined planning system that will be better suited for a modern community and easier to navigate. The new initiatives will support the delivery of new housing and create a pipeline of development projects, jobs and economic investment for the State.

The new Bill will continue delivery of the original 2019 Action Plan for Planning Reform, designed to improve transparency and consistency across the system and reduce unnecessary red tape, as well as incorporate other initiatives identified through ongoing stakeholder consultation.
