Chief Financial Officers are often defined by technical capability but, for Leslie Crockett, Chief Financial Officer at Racing and Wagering Western Australia, leadership is increasingly about something more human.

After completing the 4 leadership capability modules of Technical and Leadership Capabilities for CFOs, Leslie says the experience reinforced the value of connection and reflection.

“What resonated most was how the sessions paired honest self reflection with genuine collaboration by structuring learning alongside my peers,” he says.

“Some of the most useful moments came from fellow CFOs sharing what had worked for them and, just as valuably, what to avoid!”

The leadership capability modules are delivered by the Public Sector Commission, with the program’s 3 technical capability modules delivered by the Department of Treasury and Finance.

Together, the 7 modules provide CFOs with what they need to excel in their vitally important role of overseeing all aspects of agency financial management, maximising public sector effectiveness and deliver increased value to the community.

Leslie says the practical tools help to embed leadership learnings back in the workplace.

“The biggest shift for me is to be very deliberate in how I lead myself before I lead others,” he says.

He also walked away with a clearer view of the evolving role of CFOs.

“Technical excellence is now a given,” says Leslie.

“Where we add the most value is through self awareness, influence and the strategic contribution we make.”
