‘Learn and live according to your learning’. The memory of his primary school motto drew Nilakshan Swarnarajah to the Commission’s Propel program for emerging leaders.

Now principal policy consultant at the Department of Training and Workforce Development, Nilakshan was one of the first people to complete Propel. He says he learned a lot and developed both personally and professionally.

“Propel has a great balance of theory and practice,” he says.

“Through the learning experiences and the insights shared by participants from across the sector you get a range of information and tools to use when you are facing challenges or issues.”

Nilakshan says he was impressed with the quality of the content developed and delivered by the Australian Graduate School of Management at the University of New South Wales.

“You usually need to do a bit of research to find learning materials you can trust and are suited to your needs. But Propel has been created specifically for new managers in the WA public sector, so this is already done for you,” he says.

“You know what you are reading is supported by evidence.”

Propel’s 3 microcredential units – which are offered 4 times a year – build capabilities and insights crucial for effective and dynamic leadership.

Each unit runs for 10 weeks and the credits earnt can count towards a formal qualification. At the end of the program, participants have a personalised leadership blueprint to continue their leadership growth and development.
