The draft Renewable Energy Planning Code and supporting Guidelines set out a framework for assessing renewable energy development in Western Australia. They have an initial focus on wind farms, with flexibility to expand to other technologies such as solar farms and battery energy storage systems.
Once finalised and adopted through local planning schemes, the Code will establish consistent statewide standards for renewable energy projects, providing improved certainty and consistency for communities, industry and decision-makers. These standards aim to balance development needs with transparency and effective management of potential impacts, supporting Western Australia’s transition to clean energy.
Supporting documents outlining proposed amendments to the Planning and Development (Local Planning Schemes) Regulations 2015 and Planning and Development (Significant Development) Regulations 2024 are also included in the information package to ensure stakeholders have a complete understanding of proposed changes to the planning framework.
