The Land and Field Management team is helping improve essential infrastructure and access to services in the remote community of Kalumburu through the remote Aboriginal Housing and Municipal Services GAP Project.
Supported by $8.4 million from the State Government through Royalties for Regions, the project enables the Department to address urgent housing and essential services across remote Aboriginal communities on Crown land and Aboriginal Lands Trust (ALT) estates.
This includes infrastructure such as roads, water, waste management and sewerage as well as environmental health initiatives, and the removal of unsafe or derelict assets.
Kalumburu was identified as a priority community, because its remote location and seasonal road closures make reliable road infrastructure critical to community access and connectivity.
The Department worked closely with Main Roads Western Australia to deliver road upgrades as part of the Kalumburu Airstrip Reseal Project. Works included repairs to the access road connecting the community to the airstrip, upgrades to internal roads and maintenance of the barge access road to support the delivery of food, fuel, equipment and other essential goods and services to the community.
These improvements will help strengthen safe and reliable access to services and supplies, particularly during the wet season.
The project also created valuable employment and training opportunities, with community members engaged to assist with the road works.
Through collaboration across government, the Department is delivering practical improvements that strengthen community safety, access to essential services, and support better living outcomes for Aboriginal people in remote communities.
