The transformation of Western Australia’s environmental approvals system is gaining pace with the launch of a new website to support job-creating projects.

Department of Water and Environmental Regulation Director General Alistair Jones said the Priority Customers website was part of a coordinated, cross-government drive to improve efficiency.

“We’re making it easier for investors to get strategic projects up and running by creating a streamlined, customer-focused approvals path,” he said.

“Our new Priority Approvals team is a single point of contact to coordinate between agencies and keep projects moving by identifying issues early and resolving them.

“Parallel assessments now allow multiple approvals to progress at the same time, reducing delays and cutting red tape.

“The reforms are designed to simplify approvals while preserving WA’s world-class environmental standards.”

The website details our role in managing significant projects under the state’s Lead Agency Framework as well as high-profile developments judged to be a priority by the department and the Minister for the Environment.

Substantial reform has been achieved since the 2023 independent review of WA’s environmental approvals, including legislative and process changes.

The groundwork has now been laid to enable priority projects, such as major green energy developments, and fulfill the vision for WA to become a renewable energy powerhouse is while protecting biodiversity for future generations.
