Acting Road Safety Commissioner Iain Cameron today attended the traditional Blessing of the Roads ceremony in Tapping with Mayor of Wanneroo Tracey Roberts.
White crosses were placed at the intersection of Joondalup Drive and Wanneroo Road as symbols of the tragic loss of life on WA roads.
“One death on our roads is one too many, and if this visual display reminds drivers and other road users to be extra vigilant this weekend, then that improves road safety for everyone,” said Mr Cameron.
Slow down, don’t drive while impaired by alcohol or drugs, or if you’re tired or been awake too long.
The Blessing of the Roads is an annual event held by the City of Wanneroo in conjunction with WALGA’s RoadWise, to promote safe driving over the four-day Easter weekend.
“The Blessing of the Roads ceremony is a chance to remind West Australians to do the right thing on the roads this weekend,” said Mr Cameron.
“It’s a simple message for drivers - slow down, don’t drive while impaired by alcohol or drugs, don’t drive if you’re tired or been awake too long, buckle up and if you can’t leave your mobile phone alone, lock it in the boot before your journey.”
Double demerit points are now in force until midnight Monday 2 April, and apply to all speeding, drink and drug driving, seatbelt, red light and mobile phone offences.
