  • City Beach Primary School and Bob Hawke College students join Keep Australia Beautiful WA, SeaLink and Rottnest Island Authority to remove litter at Stark Bay
  • Team collected a total of 786 different items weighing more than 67.5 kg
  • Event marked Keep Australia Beautiful Week, which ran from 4 to 10 August

By the end of the day, the team had collected a total of 786 items of litter, weighing more than 37.5 kg.

More than 250 kg of litter has been removed by volunteers in previous clean-ups at Thomson Bay, Pinky Beach, The Basin, Samphire and Salmon Bay.

The litter collected was audited and the data added to the Tangaroa Blue Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI) database, helping to reveal the types and amounts of litter collected across different areas.

This information supports government efforts to reduce single-use plastics and helps track the effectiveness of related policies, and guide future waste reduction strategies.

KAB Week, held every year in August, is a time to raise awareness about the simple actions everyone can take in their daily lives to reduce our impact on the environment and reduce litter.

Litter is not just a nuisance – it threatens wildlife, pollutes landscapes and undermines the health of our communities.

This year’s theme “Picking up the Pieces” highlights the shared responsibility people have for restoring and maintaining the beauty of the Western Australian environment.

To mark the occasion, KAB WA provided litter-related books to primary schools, high schools and local government libraries across Western Australia.

These resources aim to spark conversations and inspire action among young readers and their communities during KAB Week and beyond.

Other KAB Week activities included clean-ups with Wundowie Primary School, the UWA Student Guild, the City of Kwinana and the Shire of Northam.
