Challenging assumptions, building new connections and taking a deeper look at how you lead every day.

This is the takeaway of Natalie Fisher, Director of Strategic Projects at the Ombudsman WA and one of 24 participants in this year’s Elev8 cohort.

“I wasn't expecting to do so much self reflection,” Natalie explains.

“I didn't appreciate how important it is to be open and vulnerable to grow as a leader.”

While challenging, Natalie says it was the support and shared experience that makes the Elev8 journey worthwhile.

“I also didn't expect to meet so many people that I connect with so well in a short space of time.

“It's one of the things I love about Elev8 – we're all in leadership roles, we're all in the public service, and we all face similar challenges.”

Elev8 participants have just completed the Cultural Leader, expanding their understanding of diversity, inclusion and cultural safety, and how these contribute to delivering better results for WA.

“It’s really opened my eyes,” Natalie says.

“I think we should be doing more to encourage different perspectives, particularly in the public sector where we're here to serve the community.

“The community is not just made up of one type of person so if we don't understand diversity, inclusion and cultural safety, then we're actually not doing our jobs.”

“The session explored the idea that leaders cast a long shadow. It showed me how being an inclusive leader can influence my team and create positive outcomes.”
