Based on the latest health advice, WA will introduce a hard border with Tasmania and the Northern Territory from 12.01am Sunday, 26 December 2021.

Based on the medium risk category, travel from Tasmania and Northern Territory will not be permitted, unless you are an approved traveller and receive approval to enter via G2G Pass.

Approved travellers include:

  • certain senior Government officials
  • certain active military personnel
  • a member of the Commonwealth Parliament
  • a person carrying out functions under a law of the Commonwealth
  • a specialist or category of specialist required for the performance of time critical services where the specialist's skills are not otherwise reasonably available in Western Australia who is approved by the State Emergency Coordinator or an authorised officer; or
  • any person or category of persons who has been approved by the State Emergency Coordinator or an authorised officer.

The final category includes compassionate reasons, including those Western Australians that may have travelled to Tasmania and Northern Territory recently and need to return to WA. These people should apply for this approval when they submit a G2G Pass application to travel to WA.

Approved travellers arriving to WA after Sunday 26 December 2021, 12.01am must:

  • provide proof double dose vaccination against COVID-19 (if eligible);
  • provide proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test in the 72 hours prior to departure (if aged 12 years or older);
  • be double dose vaccinated against COVID-19 (if eligible);
  • present for a COVID-19 test on arrival (within 48 hours) and on day 12;
  • self-quarantine for 14 days in suitable premises;
  • complete a G2G Pass declaration prior to arrival, stipulating they do not have any COVID-19 symptoms and which jurisdictions they have been in the previous 14 days;

Anyone who has recently arrived from Tasmania and Northern Territory prior to the hard border should continue to comply with their existing Directions, under the low risk settings provided to them upon entry to the state.

It is important that recent travellers from these jurisdictions familiarise themselves with the latest exposure sites reported by Tasmania Health and Northern Territory Health.

Recent arrivals into WA are also asked to continue to monitor the locations visited by confirmed cases site.

For anyone who has come into contact with someone who recently arrived from Tasmania or the Northern Territory, self-quarantine is not necessary and COVID-19 testing is only required if symptoms develop.

Anyone who is unwell or experiencing symptoms should get tested for COVID-19 and self-quarantine until they return a negative test result.

A list of testing clinics is available on the HealthyWA (external link) website.

The Chief Health Officer will continue to monitor and review border controls should there be significant changes in the public health situation.
