About the program
The Transitional Housing Program creates pathways for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in Western Australia to transition into private rental or home ownership.
The project provides participants with a secure and affordable home as well as personalised support to help them build the skills, confidence and independence they need to reach their housing goals.
First launched in Kununurra in 2012, the award-winning program is now available in six locations across the West Kimberley, East Kimberley and Hedland regions:
- Broome
- Derby
- Halls Creek
- Kununurra
- South Hedland
- Wyndham.
The Transitional Housing Program is delivered by regional service providers on behalf of the Department of Housing and Works.
Participant success story
Sarah and her partner Sam joined the Transitional Housing Program in Broome with a goal to build a home for their family.
With support from the program, the couple improved their money management and grew their savings, enabling them to build and move into their own home within two years.

If you would like to one day own your own home or live in a private rental, this program may be right for you. Below you will find answers to key questions you may have about the program.
Can I join the program?
Show moreThe program is for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people living in Western Australia. You can apply whether you are single, part of a couple or have a family.
To be eligible for the program, you or another member of your household must be an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person over the age of 18.
You must also:
- have a strong connection to the region, such as work or family
- not currently own property or land
- want to move towards home ownership or private rental
- be employed, in training, or actively looking for work or training
- agree to work with service providers to achieve your goals.
What can the program help me with?
Show moreThe program supports you to work towards your personal and family goals, such as:
- improving your financial skills and independence by reducing debt, saving money and managing your budget
- gaining skills through training, education or work
- moving into private rental or home ownership.
You will work with support staff to agree on your goals and the support you need.
Not everyone is expected to buy a home during the program, and you do not need to purchase a home to participate.
