How to renew your registration
- If your registration is due to expire you can submit an application for renewal up to twelve weeks before the expiry date stated on your registration certificate.
- You must lodge your completed renewal application, supporting documents and payment before the expiry date. This will allow you to avoid the more complicated process for late applications.
- You can apply online (see below), download the form, or call the department on 1300 489 099 to request that one be posted to you. Please see all application options below.
- It is important to note that incomplete applications will not be processed. Once a renewal application is accepted, your registration continues to be current past the expiry date, until a decision is made on your renewal application. While you are waiting for an outcome on your application, you may continue to undertake any work permitted by the registration.
- If you are an Individual, please ensure your Building Practitioner registration is current. If it is due to expire in the next three months, you must lodge both Building Practitioner and Contractor renewal applications together, as registration is subject to the building practitioner approval.
- The “current” status of your registration can be found on the Register of Builders or Online Licence Search which is updated daily.
Your application will be processed by the renewals team for consideration by the Building Services Board (the Board). The Board will then issue successful applicants with new certificates of registration.
Financial capacity
The Building Services (Registration) Act 2011 requires the Building Services Board (the Board) to be satisfied that a building service contractor in their class of registration continues to meet the prescribed financial requirements.
All contractors must answer questions about their financial capacity and provide any supporting documents as detailed on the application forms as evidence of financial capacity.
Practitioner renewal
To renew your practitioner registration, the application can be completed on the Building practitioner registration - Renewal page.
Fees and payments
If you are submitting your application by post (or in person), payment of the fee must accompany the renewal form. Acceptable payment methods are cheque, money order, credit card, cash or EFTPOS. For details and more information visit licensing and registration fees and charges.
The department is committed to protecting your personal information it collects, uses or discloses when processing applications and making transactions. Under no circumstances should you include your payment card (credit/debit) details as part of any application submitted online. This includes for payment, proof of ID or within any other supporting documentation such as financial statements that accompany your application.

Late applications
Show moreLate applications may be lodged within six months after the expiry date of a registration, but you must first write a letter giving reasons for the delay. You can use the late application form for this purpose. If the Board accepts your reasons, you are then required to complete a renewal application form and pay the required fee.
If the Board does not accept your reasons, you may not apply to renew your registration, but you may apply for a new registration. The board has particular forms to assist applicants applying for a new registration within three years of a former registration expiry date.
It is recommended that you lodge your renewal application before your registration expires to avoid the inconvenience of a late application or a new registration. If you have difficulty submitting your complete renewal application on time, please submit an incomplete renewal application before the expiry date. Contact the Licensing area for further assistance on 1300 489 099.
For more information, please refer to the Board's policy on late applications (renewals).
What happens after you apply
Show moreAfter you have lodged your application, an assessor will review your application in detail. Further information may be requested during the assessment, and if not provided, your application may be delayed or refused.
Note: if we need to request additional information, the process will take longer. Make sure you submit all required information and documents with your application to avoid delays.
If all the required information is provided, we aim to make a decision within 50 business days. If more information is needed, processing may take longer.
Please note if you are registered as an individual building practitioner and contractor that expire at the same time, the building contractor application will not be finalised until the building practitioner application is finalised.
