Hydrological and nutrient modelling of the Wilson Inlet catchment

Technical Report
Water Science Technical Series report WST 90 – modelling scenarios of land use, nutrients and climate change to guide catchment management
Last updated:
The Wilson Inlet is a seasonally closed estuary on the south coast of Western Australia, adjacent to the town of Denmark. The estuary covers approximately 48 km², with a catchment area of around 2240km2.

Hydrological and nutrient models were developed using the eWater Source platform, drawing on key datasets including meteorological records, land use, catchment boundaries, stream networks and soil information. The models were calibrated against measured streamflow and water quality data. The calibrated model was then used to characterise current sources of runoff and nutrients across the Wilson Inlet catchment. Various scenarios were also tested to understand the potential effects of land‑use change, catchment nutrient management actions and climate change. The findings of this study will help guide future management and planning for the Wilson Inlet catchment.
