The Mental Health Act 2014  clearly articulates rights for Aboriginal mental health consumers.

In 2019, the MHAS undertook an independent inquiry. The aim of the inquiry was to improve Aboriginal Mental Health consumers’:

  • experiences of the Western Australian mental health system.
  • compliance with their rights by the Western Australian mental health system.

The report brings to attention barriers and opportunities to improve the rights of Aboriginal people to access culturally safe, appropriately supported care in accordance with the Act.

There are 15 recommendations from the inquiry.
