Distributed Energy Resources (DER) are small-scale devices connected to the distribution network that can use, generate, or store electricity. DER provide significant benefits to Western Australian electricity consumers, the power system, and the clean energy transition.
To fully realise the benefits of customer-owned technologies, they must connect and engage with the evolving power system. The Statement on Interoperability, an action of the WA Government’s Distributed Energy Resources Roadmap, details how this will be accomplished in the South West Interconnected System (SWIS) by harmonising DER remote communication capability and installation.
This statement will be incorporated into the arrangements for implementation of the WA Government’s battery rebate and no-interest loans scheme. It sets out the pathway to a future where new and upgraded DER connected to Western Power’s network can communicate with the grid through a standardised and interoperable communication protocol. Customers will have the opportunity to benefit from this capability through participation of their DER system as part of a virtual power plant or can opt for a low fixed export limit if they do not want exports from their device to be managed.
