Perth Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodation

Planning is underway to deliver an Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodation in the Perth metropolitan area.
Last updated:

In December 2020, the State Government announced a commitment to deliver Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodation in Perth.

The proposed Perth Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodation (Perth Short Stay) is a response to the needs of Aboriginal people from across Western Australia who travel to Perth to access a range of services or are visiting for business, training, education, health, medical, cultural or family reasons.
Perth Short Stay will be purpose-built to provide safe, culturally appropriate and affordable short-term accommodation and support the reduction of rough sleeping and overcrowded housing in the Perth metropolitan area.

Community and stakeholder consultation

The Department is engaging with a range of stakeholders across the state to ensure Perth Short Stay is culturally appropriate, responsive to place and welcoming to the guests it will accommodate. These stakeholders include Aboriginal people from around Perth and in regional areas throughout WA, Aboriginal cultural advisors, the community services sector and various Commonwealth, State and Local Government agencies.

Local engagement activities for Perth Short Stay commenced in December 2022 and will continue throughout 2023. Engagement with the local community and regional stakeholders represents an important milestone and a vital activity for the project.

If you have any questions or would like to know more about Perth Short Stay beyond the below engagement activities, please contact the project team at aboriginalshortstay@communities.wa.gov.au

Your input – together with the feedback received through other Short Stay engagement activities across WA – will help ensure the Perth Short Stay is welcoming, culturally appropriate, safe, secure and instils a sense of belonging for guests.

Service delivery consultation

The Department is seeking input from community service providers to help inform the service design for Perth Short Stay.

Using the proven service delivery model of existing Short Stays as a blueprint, we’re seeking to ensure the service provided at Perth Short Stay is responsive to the unique cultural and geographical requirements of operating in the metropolitan area.

Consultation will kick-off in July 2023, with a variety of meeting options available to choose from.
