WA Biodiscovery Bill: The development process

Information about how we are developing the Bill
Last updated:

To help us develop the WA Biodiscovery Bill, we are seeking feedback from Aboriginal people, researchers, businesses and other interested stakeholders on key issues and options. The information you provide helps us to build the model for how the Bill will operate.

We are developing the Bill in phases.

  • Phase 1: Completed. In 2022, we consulted with Aboriginal people, researchers, businesses and other government agencies to develop proposals and options for the Bill. The feedback was used to develop proposals for the Bill.

  • Phase 2: Completed. In 2023, we tested these proposals with stakeholders.

  • Future stakeholder engagement is currently under development.

Information and publications relating to the development of the Bill can be found on our toolkit page

Phase 1: Seeking feedback

We asked Aboriginal people, researchers and businesses about key issues to be considered when developing options for the Bill. Phase 1 included face to face workshops, 1:1 meetings with the project team, online surveys and opportunities to make written submissions.

Phase 2: Testing concepts

We used the feedback from phase 1 consultation to develop proposals for how the Bill could function. In April and May 2023, we tested these proposals with stakeholders at 2 roundtable meetings in Perth and 7 information sessions held around the State.

Future stakeholder engagement

The next phase of stakeholder engagement will focus on the development of the Bill and a Traditional Knowledge Code of Practice.
